Hi! I’m Leo
I’m the interdisciplinary artist behind Petrichor Dyed. This is a passion project born of a desire to increase my felt sense of connection with the natural world. I hand select each garment to upcycle and dye in my studio in Brooklyn, NY.
My designs intentionally mimic the recurring patterns found in the many beings that inhabit this living planet. I use low-immersion dying techniques, such as ice dye, shibori, pan dying, in order to allow water, pigment, and temperature to determine the outcome of a piece just as much as my human hands do. I prefer to use discarded or thrifted items that are discolored or stained and unlikely to be purchased. Dying extends their lifespans, keeps them out of landfills, and honors the resources that went into making them.
Through this body of work, I hope to create wearable reminders that humans are entangled with all of this living world. I believe increased recognition of this entwinement encourages healing, sustainability, and development of community.
I also make Interdisciplinary sculptures inspired by textiles
Frequently Asked Questions

Each item is dyed with professional grade pigments and adhered in a fixative that will prevent running. They can be washed and dried according to standard material care instructions and should not bleed. Please note that every item will retain it’s color longest if washed in cold water. Fading should occur at the same rate as other professional produced garments.

I price my items based on the amount of time and energy I put into each garment. I am one person operation and I hand dye each item individually - not in batches of like items. It is important to me that each piece be as unique as the person who wears it, just as each tree, rock, and mushroom is unique.
If you have fallen in love with a piece and are unable to pay the rate listed on the site, please feel free to reach out via the contact form. I am aware that these prices are not accessible to everyone and will do my best to mitigate the impact of that.

My understanding of gender is that it is an internal self awareness that is expressed through many modalities. My personal favorite is clothing. People of all genders deserve the safety and space to adorn themselves with whatever clothing they find resonant. I do not find clothing to be inherently gendered.
I have chosen to use a measurement system that provides sufficient dimensions to indicate the shape and fit of the piece. If you have questions about the fit of a particular item, please reach out via the contact form. I am happy to help.

I prefer to use items found at thrift stores or donated to me. Part of the intention of this work is to extend the life of fast fashion; giving these nearly discarded items another season.
I comb all sections of the thrift store to find high quality, natural fiber clothes for dying. It isn’t always possible to find everything I’m looking for. I often have difficulty finding larger sizes. This has myriad reasons, including the limited options fashion brands offer to folks who wear larger sizes. When I am not able to find enough items in a particular size I am happy to source something new to dye.
Each garment has a product description that indicates if the item is thrifted or new.

As a one person operation, I don’t have the capacity to process returns. All sales are final.
I hope to expand to the point where I can accept returns in the future.
